Granite and other slab materials have a very high carbon footprint by the time they arrive at their final destination. They must be first shipped to facilities where they can be cut and polished, which are located in only a few countries. They also have a high wastage factor as they are cut from slabs.

Traditional concrete has a zero waste factor and is normally sourced and mixed locally. Eight percent of worldwide greenhouse gases can be attributed to the production of concrete, and like all industries, we need to continue to develop methods for reducing the materials used to accomplish our needs. Our Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete delivers superior performance on the 3 R’s of environmental responsibility: reduce, reuse, recycle.

Reduce: While traditional concrete is poured anywhere from 1.5 to 3 inches thick, Surface Concepts fabricates our countertops at 0.75 inches thick (although they have the appearance of being any thickness desired). Our wall panels and backsplash pieces can be as thin as 3/8 of one inch.

Unlike traditional concrete, our GFRC requires no steel reinforcement.

Reuse/Recycle: Our forming materials are used again and again meaning there is very little waste created from our fabrication process.

At Firestone Creations we have no big equipment, mixers or CNC machines which use huge amounts of energy. We mix all of our product using hand mixers, and unless polishing is required, we do not have to use power polishers. From start to finish, Firestone Creations is able to keep the environmental impact of creating stone surfaces extremely low.
